But our dojo is also unique when it comes to our tuition model. Our dojo is unique because we believe in NO LONG TERM CONTRACTS! Never will you be asked to commit to more than three months; and the majority of our students are on month-to-month programs.
Do we want you to love studying with us so much that you stay with us a long time? Of course! But at the same time we realize that both adults and young people are looking for the right fit for them. Goals can and do change as life changes; consequently it's important that you practice at a dojo that doesn't force you into predicting what the future will hold. If you love learning with us; then your relationship with the mats should be the determining factor as to whether you continue to attend and pay. The decision to continue to study martial arts should not be based on something you signed, but should be based on your continued progress in the arts!
The best teachers, no long term contract, but yet still more...
Unfortunately; today in America there are few real dojo's. You are left with having to settle for a sales oriented mostly kids studio, or a highly competitive win-at-all-costs gym. We believe neither of these is the correct model or intention left by the great Masters of Martial Arts. Instead our goal is to give you real Martial Arts, in an environment that is not only safe and friendly, but also serious.
Unfortunately, most of the martial arts available today are really about redefining the arts in an attempt to make them more commercially acceptable. But our belief is that real Martial Arts - when taught well - stands on their own as some of the great accomplishments of human achievement. We believe that lowering the standards of the arts; or merely changing Martial Arts into a "sport" is the all too common consequence of poor instruction. Martial Arts should change you as a person, from the inside out, and that only happens when you are taught to discipline the mind as well as the body.
Special words from Sensei Joseph Hurtsellers:
I'm often asked how it is that our dojo's seem to do such a great job producing quality students year after year. I can't tell you how many times over the years I've had students and teachers ask me about my methods. How do you have so many students without a long term contract? How do you keep the quality high? How do you keep your students so motivated?
When I tell those who ask the truth some refuse to believe me, other's think I'm purposely withholding information. Some have gotten so frustrated that they have actually tried to spy on my dojo to try and steal what they think is a "secret formula". Truth is there is no "secret". The simple method I use is not a method at all; it's just the unique way I look at people and the world.
Ever since I can remember there has been one thing that makes me the most happy. It's the one thing that's gotten me through the hard days, the days of sleeping on the floor, and late nights away from my family. What motivates me most is the look on a students face when they finally get a technique right. The smile that comes from inside their eyes when they realize they've got it! And when that happens I realize the Martial Arts has touched their life, the same way they have mine, and I know the student will never be the same; I live for those magical moments!
My specialty is being passionate about my students progress. While it's true there are many martial artists with greater athleticism, or better technical skills; I can say without apology that I know of no one who has passed me in the love for teaching, and the love for my students.
I think it's my genuine love for my amazing students that makes me effective as a teacher. I think it's this genuine love that is responsible for most of the results we've gotten over the years. And the best part about it is that if anyone were to steal or copy this attitude I would be delighted!
